KS3 Product Design

Intent

The intent of KS3 Product Design is to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to become innovative, resourceful, and responsible designers and technologists. Product Design is a skill based curriculum that embraces the practical side of learning; our students have the opportunity to follow the full design process from designing and developing products for a specific user through to making.Our curriculum is developed to inspire students to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products considering their own and others’ needs.Students will learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable individuals. They will experience a varied and high-quality curriculum aimed at fostering creativity, problem-solving, and technical proficiency, preparing students for future studies within the subject.

Aims

Develop design thinking: Students will learn to identify problems, generate ideas, and develop solutions through a systematic design process.

​

Acquire practical skills: Students will gain hands-on experience in using a variety of tools, materials, and techniques to create products.

 

Understand materials and processes: Students will learn about different materials, their properties, and the manufacturing processes involved in creating products.

 

Develop technical knowledge: Students will gain a basic understanding of design principles, such as aesthetics, ergonomics, and sustainability.

 

Foster creativity and innovation: Students will be encouraged to think outside the box and develop innovative design ideas.

 

Promote critical thinking and problem-solving: Students will learn to analyse problems, evaluate solutions, and make informed decisions.

 

Develop communication and teamwork skills: Students will work collaboratively with others to design and create products, improving their communication and teamwork abilities.

 

Understand the impact of design on society and the environment: Students will learn about the social, economic, and environmental implications of design decisions.

 

By achieving these aims, KS3 Product Design will provide students with a solid foundation for further studies and a lifelong appreciation for Design and Technology.
