Modern Foreign Languages

Our MFL team provide a curriculum that supports linguistic development, whilst at the same time enables students to develop their knowledge and capacity of the French language and culture. We aim to enable students to identify similarities and differences between cultures and develop an attitude of tolerance and understanding of those around them. Our aspiration is to improve life chances through speaking a foreign language and to enthuse students to further expand their understanding of the wider global community whilst simultaneously developing transferrable linguistic skills.

The aims for all learners are:

  1. All students to be able to respond to spoken and written French through the means of the 5 skills; Listening, Reading, Writing, Translation and Speaking.

  2. All students will be able to understand language at different levels using Listening, Reading and Translation skills with increasing confidence

  3. All students to be able to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say; including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.

  4. All students will be able to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures and tenses that they have learnt. They will also use these skills to create prose with increasing confidence.

  5. All students will develop an understanding of the role of cognates and near cognates within a foreign language and English, so recognising that the development of language is rooted in many countries not just their own.
