Textiles Curriculum KS3

Intent

The Textiles curriculum aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to become confident and creative textile designers and makers. We believe that textiles education should be an engaging and enriching experience that fosters:

​

  • Creativity and Innovation: Students will develop their imagination and express themselves through a range of creative processes, exploring diverse materials, techniques, and design ideas. They will learn to experiment, problem-solve, and refine their work to achieve their desired outcomes.

  • Technical Skills: Students will acquire a wide range of practical skills, including:

    • Hand sewing techniques: Running stitch, back stitch, slip stitch, French seam, appliqué.

    • Machine sewing techniques: Straight stitch, zigzag stitch, overlocking, pattern cutting.

    • Textile techniques:  Dyeing, printing, embroidery.

    • Textile manipulation: Draping, folding, pleating, knotting.

  • Design and Technology Principles: Students will learn to apply design principles such as function, aesthetics, sustainability, and ergonomics in their projects. They will develop their understanding of how to use design briefs, generate ideas, and evaluate their work effectively.

Aims

  • Develop design thinking: Students will learn to identify problems, generate ideas, and develop solutions through a systematic design process.

  • Acquire practical skills: Students will gain hands-on experience in using a variety of  materials, and techniques to create products.

  • Understand materials and processes: Students will learn about different materials, their properties, and the manufacturing processes involved in creating products.

  • Develop technical knowledge: Students will gain a basic understanding of design principles, such as aesthetics, ergonomics, and sustainability.

  • Foster creativity and innovation: Students will be encouraged to think outside the box and develop innovative design ideas.

  • Promote critical thinking and problem-solving: Students will learn to analyse problems, evaluate solutions, and make informed decisions.

  • Develop communication and teamwork skills: Students will work collaboratively with others to design and create products, improving their communication and teamwork abilities.

  • Understand the impact of design on society and the environment: Students will learn about the social, economic, and environmental implications of design decisions.
