Computing
Intent:
The intent of the computing curriculum is to develop our students to become independent users of IT, taking a computational thinking approach to problem solving. Supporting students in becoming selective users of data and information.
We have designed our Key Stage 3 curriculum to underpin the key areas of Computer Science, Digital Literacy and Information Technology.
To develop their understanding of Computer Science, students will learn about computer hardware, elements of the computer system and the CPU, which will act as a building block to further their comprehension of networks topologies, protocols, connectivity and the Internet of Things. Students will learn how to decode binary, create algorithms and have the opportunity to use two different programming languages. Digital Literacy ensures that students are equipped with knowledge of how to use computers safely, recognise inappropriate content and threats to data. They will develop their understanding of legislation that protects users in the digital world. Students will engage in all aspects of Information Technology such as creating & modelling using spreadsheets & database software. Broadening their creative skills to create and repurpose digital artefacts; such as image manipulation, video & sound editing , using graphic software to design logos & banners and to create interactive digital media products.
Students with SEND will be provided with specific support; including video tutorials, teacher modelling and in classroom support, scaffolding and the differentiation of activities to ensure they can access the curriculum and enable them to thrive within their computing lessons.

Aims:

-
To apply the concepts of computer science including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation.
-
To analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems.
-
To use digital technologies in ways that are effective, safe, and comply with legislation.
-
To be competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
-
To develop skills across a range of graphics and media applications to create digital products
-
To develop pupils’ theoretical knowledge and store of technical words to improve their vocabulary.
